Grade 4 students visited the Living Lab during the week of February 22nd.Under the direction of Carol Shestok, K-5 Science Coordinator, students undertook three very exciting life and earth and space science experiments as they engaged in their “Shake, Rattle, and Roll” Living Lab theme, an integral part of their “Land and Water” unit. Outside, students made brook observations in order to compare and contrast their findings with their fall visit. Data collected included water depth, pH, turbidity, and temperature as well as weather observations.

Students worked with Ms. Stacy Moulis, seismologist from Boston College Weston Observatory, observing and analyzing our LL seismographic readings and the various earthquake waves. In addition, they were able to study seismographic recordings of current earthquakes around the world as recorded at the Living Lab.

Students also viewed the rapid earth changes of erupting volcanoes and the slow process of land regeneration. With scientist, Dr. Karen Giannasca, and Mrs. Shestok, students engaged in hands-on creations of volcanic eruptions and observed and discussed their findings. Using a landslide model, student also observed and discussed landslides.

Please look for the upcoming reminder of our Living Lab Gala Events.  At each gala, students in grades 1-5 will act as artists and scientists as they display their Living Lab products. We shall have three of these evening events with each intermediate school hosting one on a specific date. The events will be at the Abbot School for Abbot/Nabnasset students, at the Crisafulli School for Crisafulli/Robinson students, and at the Day School for Day/Miller students.

The grade 4 students visited the Living Lab during the week of October 5, 2009. They explored the Reed Brook habitat and observed the flora, fauna, and soil layers. They also discussed erosion and weathering. They recorded water and weather data for seasonal comparisons. Further, the students studied our new addition to the Living Lab, the Living Lab Rain Garden. Please ask them about the Rain Garden. These experiences are included in their Living Lab science and arts integrated project "Shake, Rattle, and Roll". Their Living Lab experience is an integral part of their science unit, "Land and Water".

Under the direction of Carol Shestok, K-5 Science Coordinator, students undertook a scientific investigation to determine which block house their team constructed would best withstand a student-produced earthquake and why.  In addition, Mrs. Stacy Moulis, a seismologist form Boston Collegeís Weston Observatory, provided an interactive presentation on earthquakes and the workings of our Living Lab seismograph.  Students were able to produce waves that were recorded on the seismograph. Also, Dr. Karen Giannasca, a microbiologist, helped facilitate students through the microscope stations to observe Brook organisms and Brook soil that was weathered and eroded.
