 The grade 5 students visited the Living Lab during the week of October 19, 2009. They explored the Reed Brook habitat and observed the flora and fauna. In addition, students recorded water and weather data for seasonal comparisons. Further, the students studied our new addition to the Living Lab, the Living Lab Rain
Garden. Please ask them about the Rain Garden. These investigations are included in their Living Lab science and arts integrated project "Brook Book." Their Living Lab experience is an integral part of their science units, "Animal Studies" and "Ecosystems".
 Under the direction of Carol Shestok, K-5 Science Coordinator, students explored the impact of and prevention of erosion and environmental pollution. This study was done as students solved various problems using an environmental model. Ms. Jessica Cajigas, Westford Water Department education liaison, led the exploration. Mr. Paul Starratt, Town Engineer, provided a birdís eye view of a storm drain and discussed its function in relation to our Rain Garden.
 In addition, Dr. Karen Giannasca, a microbiologist, helped to facilitate the organism study through student observation and documentation at the Brook and habitat stations. Students recorded form and function and unique characteristics of the animals observed as well as sketched the organism in their unique habitats.
