Musical growth relies as much on muscle memory as it does on cognitive development. Muscle memory retention is increased by frequent repetitions, therefore our practice goal has two components - number of days per week and number of minutes practiced. The practicing goal for all elementary grades is to practice 5 days a week. Third graders aim to practice 10-15 minutes a day, fourth graders for 15 minutes per day and fifth graders for 20 minutes per day. Some students may require additional practice time to be adequately prepared for Strings class. Students are expected to record all practicing daily on the chart inside the front cover of their method book, where they will write the weekly assignment, and parents sign the chart weekly. Mastery of Weekly Assignments is determined through a combination of evidence of practicing from the practice chart and through demonstrated mastery of homework.
4 = Exceeds the standard = Meets or exceeds the practicing goal every week and masters weekly assignments.
3 = Meets the standard = Meets the practicing goal every week or in an average week and usually masters weekly assignments.
2 = Approaching the standard = Averages 50-90% of weekly practicing goal.
1 = Needs improvement = Averages less than 50% of weekly practicing goal.
