Dear Parents,
The Westford Schools/Public Library Collaborative encourages your family to make summertime reading an important part of your leisure time activities.
Please consult our reading lists of suggested books and authors for students entering grades one through five. If you are unable to download the lists from this site, some will be available at the J.V. Fletcher Library. They include current award-winning books as well as books recognized by our staff and literary journals as appropriate choices for students. You may choose books on these lists or others that your child has shown an interest in reading.
Reading aloud with your child is an enjoyable activity at any age. This helps to build vocabulary, enhance listening skills, and promote an appreciation of good literature. When helping your child choose a book for independent reading, it is helpful to try these strategies. First, have him/her look at the cover and read the blurb on the back of the book or book jacket to determine interest level. Then, try the “five finger” test: your child reads a page from the middle of the book aloud and puts up a finger for each word that is mispronounced or unknown. Usually if a child makes five errors, the book is too hard.
J.V. Fletcher Library will be overflowing with activity during the summer. Youth Services will be sponsoring a wonderful incentive program called “Reading is a Blast!” You are invited to bring your child to the library to sign up for the program and to attend the many interesting and fun presentations available.
Have a relaxing and safe summer reading together. We look forward to seeing you at the library throughout the summer.
