Summer Reading Lists
The Westford Public Schools and J V Fletcher Library encourages your family to make summertime reading an important part of your leisure time activities.

At left are lists of suggested books and authors. It includes current award-winning books as well as books recognized by our staff and literary journals as appropriate choices for students.  You may choose books on this list or others that your child has shown an interest in reading. Most selections are available at the Fletcher Library. There are some revisions from last year’s list.

Have a relaxing and safe summer reading together. We look forward to seeing you at the library throughout the summer.

For Parents of Westford Academy Students...........
This year all students are required to read at least one novel during the summer break. Students should read the book that has been listed as the required reading for the level of English in which they are enrolled.  If there is any question about a level, students should consult their 2010 - 2011 schedule.

The assigned reading should be completed before August 31, 2010. Book stores and libraries have been advised to expect an increased demand for certain titles. Since students will be required to bring the book to class, it is preferred that students secure their own personal copy. Students will begin the year by discussing the required reading and completing a formal assessment.  In addition to this required reading, students are encouraged to select at least two additional works recommended by the Westford Academy English Department.  We encourage parents to guide their children in their choice of additional reading materials.

For Parents of Elementary-age Children.............

Listed above are grade-appropriate links to a list of suggested books and authors for students entering grades one through five. If you are unable to download the lists from this site, some will be available at the J.V. Fletcher Library. They include current award-winning books as well as books recognized by our staff and literary journals as appropriate choices for students. You may choose books on these lists or others that your child has shown an interest in reading.
Reading aloud with your child is an enjoyable activity at any age. This helps to build vocabulary, enhance listening skills, and promote an appreciation of good literature. When helping your child choose a book for independent reading, it is helpful to try these strategies. First, have him/her look at the cover and read the blurb on the back of the book or book jacket to determine interest level. Then, try the “five finger” test: your child reads a page from the middle of the book aloud and puts up a finger for each word that is mispronounced or unknown.~ Usually if a child makes five errors, the book is too hard.
J.V. Fletcher Library will be overflowing with activity during the summer. Youth Services will be sponsoring a wonderful incentive program called “Growing Great Readers!” You are invited to bring your child to the library to sign up for the program and to attend the many interesting and fun presentations available.
Have a relaxing and safe summer reading together. We look forward to seeing you at the library throughout the summer.
