Cool Down...an update! SBS 9-7-18

Easily, the best part of any day is visiting classes and this week we were able to do a lot of that. Although it was hot and muggy and often rather ripe in terms of the great potpourri of middle school sweat, students engaged in discussions, challenged theories and each other, and often rose to the occasion despite the tremendous heat.  Yes, some students and adults looked like they were closer to the end of a great journey rather than the beginning; but alas, the cool down started just in time for the weekend giving everyone a little boost of energy.

The cool down will hopefully help with next week’s picture day scheduled for Friday, September 14.  Not to tell tales out of school...but if we took the pictures this last week, I fear a large number of folks would not have wanted the warm, haggard looks to be preserved in the school photo collection...says the guy who currently looks like a mountain goat or some nameless character in a Tolkien adventure. Remind them it doesn’t matter how many likes their chosen outfit received on Instagram but how they will want their middle school years archived when you embarrass them with these photos at their wedding.  Then tell them to cool down it has a less harsher sound than when they try to tell us to relax.

While the sun was out earlier in the week, we joined many of the other district schools in practicing our first Fire Drill of the year.  Loads of fun! Nothing like asking 668 energetic adolescents to calmly walk out of the building in silence, line up in straight quiet lines in the bright sunshine and wait to be told when you can quietly walk back into the building and get back to the business of learning.  They did an excellent job of which I was not surprised!

As mentioned earlier, Back to School night is on Thursday, September 20.  We will be staggering the evening so that we can best utilize our available parking.  The event for 6th Grade classes will go from 6:00 to approximately 7:10 allowing those parents to exit before the 7th and 8th Grade event begins at 7:30 running to approximately 8:30.  Schedules with students’ specific class locations will be sent home before that week and next Friday I will include templates of the schedules in the update in the event any of you would like to print them out and have students fill them in at home earlier.

As I have done in years past, when applicable, I will include announcements regarding Westford community opportunities for our students and families at the end of the update.  Please take time to read them. If my missives aren’t to your liking, you can always skip my words and go straight to theirs.

With that, I bid you adieu!

Teen Night:

"The Teen Night program is in need of a new team of volunteers/coordinators to run the program. Our current coordinators are retiring, but are willing to train new volunteers.  It’s a fun and rewarding experience!"

Westford Middle School Hockey:

Facilitated by Nashoba Youth Hockey Association which is Westford, Littleton and Tyngsboro rec non-profit hockey program.  Note that our Middle School Program is only for students from Westford. Last year we had 2 teams, a 6-7 grade team (no checking) and a 7-8 grade team.  The 6-7 grade team won the championship! This program is open to all kids, there are no tryouts (however, they should have some hockey experience, this is not a “learn to play” program).  We’d love to have teams from each grade level as well as girls only teams if there were enough participants.
