Cracking the code...update!SB 12-7-18

Java. Python. C++

Kibbitzers most likely understand much of the text thus far; however, linguists may discover still another layer of humor.

Today, we participated in the Hour of Code throughout the building.  It is always entertaining to see the wide range of interests and abilities of our students in terms of which platforms they choose to explore while writing computer code during the event.  It was also very nice to see some former educators join us to let some of the students teach them how to code. This multi-generational approach to the Hour of Code was a great way to connect our students with some of our local senior citizens.  Special thanks to Mrs. Schultz, our Digital Learning Specialist, for organizing and facilitating this event.

While we are on the subject of digital learning and trying to decipher language or commands, Mrs. Schultz also shared a recent article with me regarding an app many of our students are already utilizing called Tik Tok.  We thought it would be helpful to share this information with all of you in the event that you were not already aware of it.

The opening move at Monday Night’s WPS School Committee meeting was to recognize Stony Brook 7th grader Joy C. for her recent achievement of representing the United States at the International Chess Championships held in Spain.  She is currently ranked #38 in the world in her age group and was able to share some of her experience with the committee. If you remember, a few weeks ago I included the fact that her teammates were able to watch one of her five hour matches as the live feed of her chess board was silently projected on the screen in classes while the students were working on their projects.  They were able to cheer her on from a distance and talk with her about the match when she returned to school. We congratulate Joy and her family on all of her success and thank her for sharing her story with her teammates here at Stony Brook, as well. We are all very proud of her.

From cracking codes to tackling slopes; it is time to sign up for the Ski and Snowboard Club! Stony Brook will offer transportation to Nashoba Valley Ski area for six weeks, every Wednesday, starting on January 2nd. Students can take the bus and get a lift ticket for a discounted price and can also sign up for ski or snowboard lessons at a discounted rate.

Transportation is provided from Stony Brook to Nashoba and chaperones will be there until 5pm.  Parents are responsible for picking up their children. The deadline to sign up has been extended to Wednesday, December 12th.

Please contact Stephanie Sullivan at ssullivan@westfordk12.us to have a form emailed to you if you need one, or your child can pick up a form at the office or in Mrs. Sullivan's room 307.

Don’t forget to save a place on your calendars to visit next week’s production of Urinetown: the musical.  Not that visiting Urinetown is a smart goal...but then as Officer Lockstock will tell you, “you’ll hear more about that in Act 2”.  Don't be fooled by the title, this fun, funny, and thought-provoking musical is great for the whole family. Shows are Friday, December 14th at 7pm, and Saturday, December 15th at 1pm and 7pm. Tickets are available at https://www.showtix4u.com/events/15263 and will also be sold on the following dates:

12/12 sold during student lunches in the lobby 10:40am-12:05pm

12/12 sold in the Stony Brook Performing Arts Center lobby 6:30pm-8:30pm

12/13 sold during student lunches in the lobby 10:25am-11:55am

Finally, rather than risking loss of any of this information to encryption, I will speak plainly to remind all parents of 8th graders of the upcoming deadlines that we have shared in numerous updates as of late:

>>IF you need any assistance with High School applications

>>THEN contact with Mr. Lipschutz ( elipschutz@westfordk12.us ) before Dec 17

>>IF you wish to have super adorable baby pictures of 8th graders OR mildly adorable baby pictures of 8th graders included in the 8th grade section of the 2018-2019 Yearbook

>>THEN submit pictures to Mrs. Schnare (mschnare@westfordk12.us) before Dec 21

Have a wonderfully relaxing weekend,

Chris
