Decoration Day ...Update!

150 years ago in 1868, General John A. Logan issued what was called General Order Number 11, designating the first National Decoration Day or what we recognize today as Memorial Day. He declared it to be "for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land."
(The First Official Memoral Day - May 30, 1868)

I shared that information with everyone at the close of school on Friday and reminded them of the importance of taking  time throughout this weekend and especially on Monday to reflect on the stories we already know and treasure about those connected to us and in our communities who sacrificed their lives to protect others. Additionally, I challenged students to also seek opportunities to listen and hear stories about the brave individuals who were not in military service at the time of their ultimate sacrifice but were first responders and safety officials or simply everyday citizens exhibiting heroic acts of selflessness. We have a responsibility to tell their stories and remember their contributions as they have protected us, our liberty and our world as we know it.

Looking ahead, the Team Structure Survey for students entering 6th and 7th grade will remain open through the weekend, but will close Monday night at midnight. The survey and informational links can be found on our website.

Have a wonderful, relaxing weekend.
