Psithurism...update! SB 5-29-2020

When my daughter was very young, we would sit together on our front porch and listen to the wind blow through the trees on our property.  I would tell her that it was the trees talking to each other as the leaves from one tree would always answer the other.  Years later she bought me a beautiful picture of trees with the inscription: Psithurism- (noun) the sound of wind whistling through the trees.  There has certainly been plenty of time as of late to appreciate this special language sweeping through the air.

It is hard to believe that next week is the beginning of June.

Each grade has been collaborating on ways to close out this school year and there are a number of things in the works for the last week of school.  Working backwards, we will be ending the year with our Gr8 Celebration on the morning of June 16.  Previously, this award ceremony has been a whole school event allowing all of the students and teachers to gather in recognizing many of our Gr8 Award recipients and coming together as a community to celebrate one last time.  Unfortunately, this year we will not be able to sit together in the heat of the gymnasium while straining to catch a breeze of fresh air from the opened doors.  Instead, we are planning to hold a virtual Zoom event for the celebration with our Gr8 students that morning and a specific link with access instructions will be sent to those families on or before June 12.  We are also organizing a way for all of our 6-8 families to drive-by the school to see the teachers one last time before we wrap-up for the summer.  I will share more information about those things in next week’s update.

As we float closer to summer, the WA Ghostwriter asked if we would pass on a great upcoming opportunity for all of our students. The Westford Academy Ghostwriter has decided to run a summer camp this summer for rising 7th, 8th, and 9th graders on the basics of journalism. This camp will expose them to how our newspaper works and provide them an opportunity to experience journalism prior to entering high school.  For more information, please access this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1A0sUvPzUMu51mC_vq6EuNDD90TrjxR2K7qHYk-taK_E/viewform?edit_requested=true

Mr. McElhinney is still accepting submissions for next year’s Agenda cover. You can get all of the directions and information about the contest here: 2020-2021 Agenda Cover Contest

Finally, the WPS Visual and Performing Arts Curriculum Coordinator, Ms. Mejia, has asked us to share the following information:

Dear Parents,

We will be offering an opportunity to return musical instruments to David French Music Company on Wednesday, June 10 from 9-11 am in the Abbot parking lot.  Please be sure you have called David French in advance (508-366-5994) to let them know you will be dropping an instrument off.  There will be a designated area in the parking lot with David French representatives there during that time.  Also, please be sure your child's name is clearly labeled on their instrument.  Instruments should only be returned if your student is not planning on continuing in the program next fall.  If your student is planning on continuing, they should keep the instrument for the summer and continue practicing!  Please reach out to your child's instrumental music teacher with any additional questions.  We wish you a happy summer!

Sincerely,

Andrea Mejia

Hopefully, the trees’ conversations do not get too wild this evening.

Take care,

Chris
