Smile...an update! SBS 9-14-18

The flash of lights, the glimmer of smiles, the parade of outfits...the only thing missing was the red carpet. However, some of the students did inform me that the multi-colored...although seemingly beige...auditorium carpet has flecks of red within it and could be an acceptable substitution for the event.  Picture Day in middle school: documentation and archived evidence of the awkward years.  Oh, and the students had their pictures taken, as well.

Next Thursday is Back to School night.  As mentioned earlier, we are staggering the times for the grades so that we do not have all of the parents here in the building at the same time as it could overextend our parking capacity.  The event for families with students in 6th grade will begin at 6:00 and run until approximately 7:10. The event for families with students in 7th and 8th grades will run from 7:30-8:30. You can access the templates of schedules for the events here:  SB Back to School 2018.  Students will be bringing home copies of their order of classes for you to follow, but in the event that any of them forget or happen to lose the paper between here and home, you can print your own template and have them fill out another one.

Finally, Ms. Hanly, our school nurse, has asked me to share the following message with all of you:

Dear Parent/ Guardian:

Massachusetts General Law c. 71, s. 57 requires all publicly enrolled students in grades 5 through 9 to receive annual postural screening for scoliosis. Postural screening is essential as your child is going through his/her most rapid rate of growth during 5th- 9th grade. During this time, early detection of a spinal curvature can create opportunities for the easiest treatment to correct the growth of the spine. Not recognizing the problem until the child is fully grown can lead to serious complications as an adult, such as pain and even difficulty breathing, which may only be corrected by surgery.

Generally, these screens are part of your son/daughter’s annual physical examination with their pediatrician. However, if you would like Mrs. Hanly to complete this important examination, please notify her in writing no later than October 1, 2018.

Please call Mrs. Hanly at 978-392-6974 with any questions.

Help Support the WA Choir:

The Westford Academy Choir is having a Yard Sale and a Bake Sale on Saturday, September 22nd, 2018. It will be going on from 8 am to 1 pm at 7 Juneberry Lane Westford, MA 01886. The proceeds go towards fundraising for their trip to Carnegie Hall next April! Spread the word and they hope you are able to come!

WASA TEEN Night:

The WASA Teen Night program is in need of a new team of

volunteers/coordinators to run the program. Our current coordinators

are retiring, but are willing to train new volunteers.  It’s a fun and

rewarding experience!

Westford Middle School Hockey:

Facilitated by Nashoba Youth Hockey Association which is Westford, Littleton and Tyngsboro rec non-profit hockey program.  Note that our Middle School Program is only for students from Westford. Last year we had 2 teams, a 6-7 grade team (no checking) and a 7-8 grade team.  The 6-7 grade team won the championship! This program is open to all kids, there are no tryouts (however, they should have some hockey experience, this is not a “learn to play” program).  We’d love to have teams from each grade level as well as girls only teams if there were enough participants.
