RE: 2024 Trustee Awards and Community Scholarships

At Senior Scholarship Night, a total of over $200,000 in scholarships will be presented to Westford Academy graduating seniors, with $100,000 coming from the Westford Academy Trustees alone! See below for a list of scholarship opportunities made available by the Westford Academy Trustees, local families, and community organizations. 

FIRM DEADLINE for submitting all applications is Monday, March 11, 2024 at 2:00 PM.  NO EXTENSIONS OR EXCEPTIONS

Directions on How to Apply:

  • All 2024 Westford Academy graduating seniors are eligible to apply for these scholarships. The qualifications for each scholarship are listed below. Be sure you meet the requirements before you apply for each scholarship.
  • Please click on the link next to each scholarship to access the application and follow the instructions for submitting the completed application.
  • The scholarship applications are a Google Form and you will need your Google user name and password to login.  
  • Only applications with a submitted timestamp from February 15 through March 11, 2024 at 2:00 PM will be considered.
  • The FIRM DEADLINE for all scholarship applications is March 11, 2023 @ 2:00 PM. There will be NO EXCEPTIONS OR EXTENSIONS.
  • Please direct any scholarship questions to Mrs. Halloran - WA Scholarship Coordinator, Mrs. Vernalia in the School Counseling Dept. or your School Counselor.
  • Senior Scholarship Night is scheduled for Thursday, May 30, 2023 at 6:30 PM with more details to follow.  Recipients and their families will receive a personal invitation.
  • Recipients are expected to acknowledge the generosity of the Westford Academy Trustees or donating organization with a short letter of thanks and appreciation. The recipient will be provided with the acknowledgment address at the Senior Scholarship Night.
  • Seniors - please be sure your mailing address is correct in PowerSchool in case the scholarship needs to be mailed directly to you.

QUALIFICATIONS

INSTRUCTIONS

ABBOT AWARD (T)

Awarded to a WA graduating senior and attending a 4 year college. This award is given in memory of John Abbot, one of the original trustees of Westford Academy. Mr. Abbot was a Second Lieutenant in the Revolutionary War. He served as Town Clerk and Treasurer between the years of 1792 and 1794.

ALEX EMERY MEMORIAL AWARD 

Awarded to a WA graduating senior who is choosing to continue their education to attend trade school or participate in an apprenticeship. Preference given to a student with a C average and/or has learning disabilities/challenges. The intention is to help a WA graduating senior become a meaningful part of the community without going to a four year college.  Selected by the Trustee and School Selection Committee.

Awarded to a Westford Academy graduating senior with financial need who is pursuing a Science/Engineering degree at any college.

Awarded to a WA graduating senior who exhibits the following qualities:  Dedication - Westford Academy senior who is dedicated to the sport of wrestling; Perseverance - Someone who doesn't give up when faced with tough times on and off the mat; Passion - someone who has a love of wrestling and embodies all the qualities of a good wrestler. Awarded to WA graduating seniors who will continue their learning in a school of higher education to study business, entrepreneurship, veterinarian science, or animal studies. Selected by the Trustee and School Selection Committee.

Awarded to a WA graduating senior who is planning to pursue a career in education.  Mr. Julian Abbot Sr. established this scholarship in memory of his son Julian who was killed in a railroad accident at the age of fifteen.

KATIE ENOS MEMORIAL AWARD (T)

This scholarship is given in memory of Katherine Delia Enos. Katie, a member of the class of 2014, was an accomplished athlete, musician and writer, who left this earth just before her freshman year at Westford Academy. This scholarship is awarded to a WA graduating senior who has been accepted to a four year college, played a varsity sport in high school and has been involved in the arts. Preference is given to a student who has demonstrated a passion for athletics, the arts, or writing, and will be pursuing a degree in English or a related major. Awarded to a WA graduating senior who has shown a strong commitment to community service and volunteered their time to a middle or high school theater production. Recipient will plan to attend a 4 year college and demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, moral character, and positivity. Scholarship awarded in loving memory of Louise Marinilli who loved her time volunteering at Blanchard-Stony Brook Productions and worked tirelessly to make sure all students and adults had an enjoyable experience.

MATTHEW D. ROBERGE MEMORIAL AWARD (T)

This scholarship is given in memory of Matthew D. Roberge, a member of the class of 2018 who fought a courageous battle with Leukemia and left this earth just before his junior year at Westford Academy. Matthew enjoyed playing soccer, participated in Boy Scouts, and performed community service. This scholarship is awarded to a WA graduating senior who demonstrates the qualities of Matthew - selfless, genuine, and a role model who has a great sense of humor, exudes positive energy, and enriches the lives of others. Awarded to a WA graduating senior who has demonstrated resilience in the face of adversity in their early years at Westford Academy. Despite the challenges this individual faced, they rose to the challenge and demonstrated leadership amongst their peers in the classroom, community and/or the athletic field. The award can be applied to either a 2 or 4 year college. Family committee recommends to the Trustees.

This scholarship is awarded in memory of Rajiv Paluri, a member of WA Class of 2019. Rajiv was an outstanding student and an avid fan of all New England professional sports, but most importantly Rajiv was a kind and gentle soul, who was always ready to help someone in need. Rajiv was taken from us while he was in 8th grade at Blanchard Middle School, before he could start his freshman year at WA. VICTOR "CHEERIO" NEAL AWARD (T)

Awarded to a WA graduating senior.  For nearly 20 years of his 50 year residency in Westford, Victor "Cheerio" Neal Sr. was a huge fan of WA. Cheerio was a well known bus driver for and a regular attendee of many sports and extra curricular activities throughout the year. Cheerio took pride in photographing all the events he attended and then sharing the photos with faculty, students and their families.  In a win or lose situation he would always provide encouraging words, a mint, or even his famous homemade cookies to lift your spirits. You could count on Cheerio to make a positive impact as he lived by the motto: "In Life - Give More Than You Receive."

WESTFORD YOUTH LACROSSE - GUS BICKFORD FOUNDERS SCHOLARSHIP

Gus Bickford brought the sport of Lacrosse to Westford and founded Westford Youth Lacrosse in 2001. He coached the WA Boys Varsity Team for many years, devoted 15 years to WYL, and served on several Massachusetts lacrosse governing associations. Always humble, he worked tirelessly to make sure every child who wanted to play could, without regard to financial ability. Two scholarships (one female and one male) will be awarded to WA graduating seniors who participated in the WYL program. Academic achievement, community service, extra-curricular activities, and participation in Westford Youth Lacrosse will be considered.

Awarded to WA graduating seniors who have made a significant positive contribution to WYSA typically through volunteer activity in WYSA, demonstrated leadership on and off the field during WYSA activities and/or participation as a WYSA player throughout their school years.  Selected by the WYSA Board of Directors.
