School Council Minutes

March 21, 2019

 

Attendees:

James Antonelli, Karen Benway, Stephanie Devlin, Marcos Acosta, Sophie Jiang, Robert Ware, Wendy Pechacek, Gina Schladenhauffen, Clare O’Brien.

 

Reviewed Minutes from the February 14th meeting.

 

Traffic proposal is going to Board of Selectman next week.

 

Bob Ware was present at meeting on February 14th.  Committee approved minutes.

 

Reviewed School Improvement Plan.

 

#1       PD on google classroom is well underway.

 

#2       SEI instruction

 

#3       SBIRT is happening this week – 8 & 10

 

#4       Bilingual literacy initiative – there is a committee working on this.  DESE recently released a toolbox for evaluating bi-literacy to determine seal eligibility.  Cost - $18 – 20 per student) & MCAS proficient in ELA

 

#5       Collaborative visit – NEASC priorities

            - Specific work to be done over the coming year

            - Vision of the graduate

            - Written curriculum

            - Consistent platform (Google classroom)

            - Collaboration time for faculty

 

#2       Community relations

            - Silas Mark is looking into a career fair

            - We are broadcasting some events on Westford CAT

 

Clare – Career Breakfast is well received

Sophie – Enjoyed the opportunity to speak to four different people.

Marcos – felt the job shadow was a really great experience (NetScout) to see what it looks like.

 

#3       Finance and operations

 

1. No additional funding. Reducing by 1.0 keeping a close eye on enrollment as 700 additional units are being built over the next 3 years.

 

2. Funding approved for engineering and design plans for restroom/concession facility.

 

3. No expansion due to budget concerns will work with science/engineering teachers at Nashoba Tech.

 

 

#4       Emotional, physical and intellectual well-being

            - Counselor on call rotation is in place

            - Guidance peer assistants program overview – students have been         interviewed – training in spring, pilot begins next fall.

 

Challenge Success update –

Student advisory group has been created and is planning a fishbowl for a future faculty meeting.

 

I wish my teachers knew campaign – put notes in faculty lunchroom.

 

GPS @ WA website – Marcos is fine-tuning the program.

 

G. Schladenhauffen asked re: status of dress code.  Recently received a new draft.

 

Colleges That Change Lives on Saturday – 50 parents attended.

 

Other:  S. Devlin – there is some anxiety among teachers about the online administration.  Bob and Jim assured her that all hands will be on deck.
