About 4% of the population have ADHD. It can affect a person’s ability to focus and can cause inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness. People with ADHD are some of the most creative, bringing energy and new approaches to how they approach tasks and projects. Several studies have shown that adults with ADHD tend to be outside the box thinkers and calm under pressure. Some famous people with ADHD are singers/songwriters Justin Bieber, Justin Timberlake, and Will.i.am, actors Channing Tatum, Ryan Gosling, and Emma Watson, gymnast Simone Bile, and astronaut Scott Kelly.

About 1% of the population have Tourette’s Syndrome. Tourette’s Syndrome causes sudden, uncontrolled, repetitive muscle movements and sounds called ‘tics.’ Stressful situations can make the tics more frequent, longer, and severe. People with Tourette’s Syndrome can be faster at assembling sounds into words and are often high achieving, creative, and empathetic. A famous singer / songwriter with Tourette’s Syndrome is Billie Eilish.

As part of Neurodiversity Celebration Week, today we will be learning about dyslexia and dyspraxia. About 10% of the population are dyslexic. Dyslexia is a language processing difficulty that can cause challenges with reading, writing, and spelling. It can cause challenges with processing information quickly, organization, sequencing, spoken language, and motor skills. Dyslexic people can be very good at creative thinking, problem solving, and verbal communication. About 35% of entrepreneurs/business owners are dyslexic. Some famous people with dyslexia are actors Kiera Knightly, Orlando Bloom, Jennifer Aniston, and Salma Hayek, Chef Jamie Oliver, and Albert Einstein, Bill Gates, and Walt Disney.

About 6% of the population are dyspraxic. Dyspraxia affects a person’s physical coordination and can be misperceived as clumsiness. Dyspraxia can affect fine motor skills, such as handwriting and the ability to tie shoes or do up buttons. It can also affect a person’s gross motor skills, such as being able to catch and kick a ball, run, or ride a bicycle. Dyspraxic people can be creative, determined, and really good at developing their own strategies to overcome difficulties. Some famous people with dyspraxia are actors Cara Delavingne and Daniel Radcliffe, and singer/songwriter Florence Welch of the band Florence and the Machine.
