Welcome to Miller School!
The Rita E. Miller School was named after a local resident who devoted her life to educating children. Rita Hosmer Edwards Miller was born in Westford in 1918. She was a student at the William E. Frost School and later at Westford Academy. After graduating from high school she attended Lowell State Teachers College and returned to Westford to teach. She remained part of the Westford Public Schools for forty-four years, serving as a teacher and later a principal of three schools. For over forty years Rita Miller was dedicated to children and to Westford.
We strive to continue her dedication to children by promoting a school environment where teachers can do their best work which enables our students to do their best learning. Integral to this is maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment that allows children and adults to be creative thinkers and risk takers. Staff work together to create a positive learning environment where children are valued and respected. Daily interactions with and between students are guided by our Miller School SPIRIT, which are Safety, Perseverance, Integrity, Respect, Inclusion and Teamwork. These tenets are the basis of the curriculum followed in our guidance and SPIRIT classes. These classes use literature to promote collaboration and rich discussion and we offer local or global compassion projects where children learn the importance of kindness, respect and what it means to be a friend.
We recognize the importance of maintaining a strong partnership between home and school, to allow us to work together in the best interest of children. There are many ways parents can get involved - joining the PTO, volunteering in the classroom and library, and helping out at school events such as the Book Fair and Movie Night. We recognize the important contributions parents make to supporting a child's success in school. There is no question about it - success at school begins at home.
We look forward to getting to know you and your child,
Miller School staff
