Celebrate Neurodiversity Week by checking out a book from the Learning Commons new Neurodiversity display.

As part of Neurodiversity Celebration Week, today we will be learning about autism. About 2% of the population are autistic. Autism affects how a person perceives the world and interacts and socializes with others, making it challenging for them to pick up social cues and interpret them. Autistic people can be sensitive to lights, noise, touch, and smells. People on the autism spectrum can be highly logical and can be good at absorbing and remembering facts, attention to detail, and recognizing patterns. Some famous people with autism are teenage activist Greta Thunberg, entrepreneur Elon Musk, Pokemon creator Satoshi Tajirithe, and actor Anthony Hopkins.

Some people have been identified with more than one neurodivergent label. Every neurodivergent individual has a unique pattern of strengths and challenges. We tend to focus on the challenges people face, rather than the many strengths and talents of neurodivergent individuals. It is important that we take a person-centered approach, rather than focusing on the label. It is important to recognize the strengths and talents of neurodivergent individuals. This helps to build confidence and self-esteem, and ensures individuals are given the opportunity to flourish in their day-to-day lives.

Yearbook is canceled for today.  We will be meeting next week instead.

Tomorrow, Friday, March 17 is St. Patrick's Day.  Wear green to celebrate and to continue competing in our spirit day competition.
