Do You Or Does Someone You Love Suffer From Anxiety?

Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress and can actually be beneficial in some situations. For some people, however, anxiety can become excessive, and while the person suffering may realize it is excessive, they may also have difficulty controlling it. One in four children between the ages of 13 and 18 are affected by anxiety disorders. Many of those do not seek or receive treatment. Why?

Join the Westford Parent Connection for a screening of Angst, a 56-minute film that explores the causes and effects of anxiety and discusses ways to cope with it. Many people do not seek treatment because there is still a stigma attached to mental illness in general. Angst features candid interviews with kids and young adults who suffer – or who have suffered – from anxiety and what they’ve learned about it. The film includes discussions with mental health experts and suggestions for help and resources. The film screening will be followed by a Q&A session with Sue Hanly, who is a registered nurse (and the school nurse at Stony Brook) and has extensive experience with mental health issues.

The screening will be held on Thursday, October 26, at 7:00 p.m. at the Stony Brook Middle School, 9 Farmer Way, Westford. Due to the generosity of our sponsors, the event is free and open to the public, and is suitable for parents, guardians, teachers, and students in grades 6-12.
