Apothecary...update!SB 3-5-21

In all my years in education, I have never heard as much discussion about CVS as I have this week.  Additionally, I never imagined how beneficial it really would be to have as many locations as they do.

In a world full of uncertainty at the moment, it is important to remember to celebrate the things we are certain about.  This morning I received an update from our MathCounts coach, Jinqi Xu, celebrating the recent achievements of our MathCounts team of students. We had 19 students sign up to participate in 3 rounds of online math practice sessions.  Of those 19, 15 participated in the MathCounts Chapter Competition.  5 team members qualified for the Chapter Invitation round: Daniel W., Hansen S., Jeffrey X. Julia Z. and Nikhil B.  During the Invitation round both Hansen S. and Jeffrey X. qualified for the state round and will move on to represent Stony Brook at the Massachusetts MathCounts State Competition on March 25.  Thank you very much to Coach Xu for all of the work and support and congratulations to all of the students for their success so far in the competition.

With the nicer weather on the horizon, we are looking forward to conducting some of our outdoor activities later this spring. Girls on the Run / Heart & Sole will take place IN PERSON, with extremely limited capacity beginning on March 30, 2021.  It is open to 6th, 7th and 8th grade students.  There are currently only 5 slots available.  If you are interested please review the links outlining the logistics.  Reach out to Ms. Oehley with any questions.

Here is the registration link , It is open and families can now register.

Last week, I shared information regarding the upcoming WA Curriculum Information Presentation. A change was needed to be made in the original Zoom link so they resent us a new link to share.  We will also be sending it out to all of our Gr8 families as a reminder next Wednesday before the event.  Here is the updated link:

This week’s notes from the clinic brought to you by Lowell’s own Consumer Value Store:

Discussions have begun about the possibility of spring sports at the middle schools. With this in mind, please make sure I have an up-to-date physical for your child on file in the clinic. The MIAA requires all middle school and high school athletes to have a current physical (within the past 13 months) in order to participate in any offered sports. If you are unsure whether or not I have a current physical on file, feel free to reach out via email or phone.

Physicals are only required in grades K, 3, 7 and 11-unless you are an athlete. Then they are required every year. Sixth grade parents, please begin to send me your child’s physical and immunization records as you take your child to their pediatrician this Spring. At the end of the school year, I will send out individual letters letting you know what information I am missing. With the earlier flu shot requirement, I have already received many physicals and immunization records of sixth grade students. The physical I will be looking for is the one dated after 9/1/2020. If you took your child for a physical this past fall and winter, that is the one that meets the 7th grade requirement. The immunizations required are Tdap, Varicella and Menactra. Please note, Menactra has been added as a required vaccine for 7th graders. See the attached Massachusetts School Immunization requirements 2020-2021.

As you are aware, there is a new vaccine that has now become available. It is called the Janssen vaccine and is manufactured by Johnson and Johnson. Here is a link to the CDC with information about this vaccine: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/different-vaccines/ja...

On a recent webinar about this vaccine, a question was asked about which is the best vaccine to get and the answer was whichever one you can get into your arm! Teachers have now become eligible for the vaccine. Several parents helped teachers obtain appointments. Thank you very much for doing that! We are all cautiously optimistic that there will be more and more available vaccines. There are also studies being conducted right now on safely immunizing children. One report suggested that J & J may be approved for children as early as September!

As always, please remain vigilant and continue to follow guidance we have all been given. If you or your child has a change in symptoms, even if they are mild, please get tested. I look forward to the day our students can be safely back here at Stony Brook! Have a good weekend.

Finally, this information was shared in a townwide email earlier regarding the Superintendent Search and all of the principals were asked to share it again in our weekly updates...really, we were all asked :-) The School Committee is welcoming and encouraging your input in the process:

STONY BROOK PTO Update

Stony Brook PTO wishes you a Marvelous March!

Teacher Appreciation continues from the Stony Brook PTO.  In February teachers enjoyed a lunch from Paul’s Diner along with a small bag of chocolates. For March we have a special treat and a token of good luck planned.

If you would like to find out more about these events and other PTO plans, please join us at our next PTO Meeting on Tuesday, March 9th at 2:15. Please email stonybrookschoolpto@gmail.com for the meeting link or with any questions. You can also find the agenda for the meeting on our new website https://sites.google.com/view/stonybrookpto/ .

In addition to discussing staff appreciation, we will be reviewing our budget, discussing if a student event is possible, developing a fundraising plan, and planning for next school year. Everyone is welcome!
