Brrr...update! SB 12-20-19

Last week the orchestra warmed my heart with Tchaikovsky, this week they warmed everyone’s hearts as they played from the balcony as students entered the school this morning.  Special thank you to Ms. Ottesen and the orchestra students for filling the halls with music to end this very cold week.

Perhaps the cold was helpful in setting the scene for the 6th graders Skype session with Antarctica today.  They were once again able to communicate directly with researchers stationed there working with the penguins.  Unfortunately, they have been experiencing 3 days of storms so the students were not able to see the penguins in the wild as the researchers needed to remain safely inside.  But they were able to see the Stony Brook flag that they sent earlier that will indeed be flying among the penguins when the weather is cooperating.

Thank you to everyone who helped with our Leadership Council’s Toy Drive to collect donations for the organization For the Love of Erika.  While we did not collect more toys than Blanchard, we were very proud of our efforts in this first year of participation and look forward to working with this organization next year.  Monday morning, the founder of the organization, Taylor Goodman-Leong, was able to come by Stony Brook and get help from many of our Leadership Council members to load up the toys.  She was very appreciative and enjoyed getting to meet so many of the students.

As we leave for this winter break, it is important for all 8th graders to remember that the final deadline to register for the Washington DC trip is December 31st. After that point our reservations are going to be final for airline travel and hotel rooms.  If you have not yet registered with EF Tours but plan to join us on our adventure, please contact EF Tours before December 31, 2019.

Just before dismissal today, I shared one of my favorite Charles Dickens quotes with everyone:

No one is useless in this world who lightens the burden of it to anyone else.

I encouraged everyone to make safe, wise choices over the vacation and to look out for those around them for whom they might be able to lighten a burden or two.  Then we wrapped 2019 by listening to John William’s Main Theme from Star Wars.  It seemed fitting.

Have a wonderful vacation!

See you in the New Year...or as many students enjoyed saying...see you in the next decade :-)
