Is it live or memorex...update!SB 12-13-19

Walking through the halls this week, I heard the wonderful sounds of Tchaikovsky floating out of the Gr8 orchestra class.  Ms. Ottesen was playing a recording for the students to hear and analyze. When I was coming back by the classroom, I decided to pop-in for a minute because I could still hear the beautiful music and wanted to listen for a moment, as well.  Lo and behold, it was no longer the recording but the 8th grade students themselves playing what sounded exactly like the recording from earlier. It was astounding.

This week the universe continues to exhibit its sense of humor and presents us with another full moon/Friday the 13th/one week left ‘til vacation combination.  Good times. The tsunami of energy building up in anticipation of reaching 1:55 on December 20 is perhaps the only thing that rivals the last day of school for the year...well, it is just that...the last day of school for 2019.

Perhaps the more pressing concern is whether or not Gr8 students will be sufficiently embarrassed by those super cute baby or remember when they used to be cute photos in the yearbook. The deadline is now riding the tsunami towards us.  Parents of 8th grade students can enhance the embarrassment process by submitting baby pictures of your children for the yearbook. If you would like to do so, please access this survey (8th Grade Baby Photos) before it closes on December 20th. We will also include a link on the yearbook home page.

Special thanks to Ms. Smith, our librarian, for organizing and providing another wonderful book fair for all our students this week.  It is always fun to peruse the offerings and see which titles and collections seems to garner the most student interest.

Additional appreciation goes out to the WMSPTO for sponsoring another Arts and Enrichment event this week.  Ancient Egypt: Pyramids & Pharaohs was presented to our 7th graders on Tuesday. Everyone seemed to be engaged in the stories and opportunities to get involved.

The last day of our Toy Drive is Monday.  If you haven’t participated already and would like to do so, you have one more weekend as a representative from “For the Love of Erika Toy Collection” will be picking up our donations early next week. So, Monday will be the last day to donate.  To date, 170 toys have been collected at Stony Brook. Toys will be personally delivered to the Dept of Children and families, as well as area shelters and hospitals. Erika Gould was a student at Robinson when she passed away from a brain tumor many years ago. Her friend, Taylor Leong, started this toy drive several years ago. (Please see this flier for more information: For the Love of Erika Toy Collection) Blanchard has participated in this drive in the past. This year, we will be competing with Blanchard and they are quite ahead in terms of this year’s collection. A trophy will be awarded to the school that brings in the most amount of toys. In particular, they are looking for Barbies, learning toys and legos.  The collection runs from Dec 2nd-Dec 13th. There will be a prize to the Advisory who brings in the most. Thanks for your support.
