Serving others...update!SB 1-17-2020

This morning we were able to honor 19 of our students with Citizenship Awards in recognition of the work they do to help others and go above and beyond in exemplifying our core values of Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Dedication, Excellence (P.R.I.D.E.).  I reminded everyone how fitting it is on this day before the long Martin Luther King, Jr Day weekend to reflect on how we can all seek ways to be of service to others and should not just relegate that act to one day or weekend. Please join me in congratulating and thanking the following students who were nominated by their teachers based on the example they set for their peers:

8th grade- Mackenzie A., Angela B., Jack D., Katherine D., Kyle G., Brandon M., and Ada T.

7th grade- Noah B., Erin K., Andrew M., Lara R., Nicholas S., and MengMeng Z.

6th grade- Troy C., Victoria F., Molly F., Eesha G., Kate K., and Sean P.

Per usual, I saw wonderfully engaged students in a wide variety of settings this week.  Gr8 students gathered in the auditorium this morning to watch the complete version of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Gr7 students shared some of their topics they are researching as they develop their public speaking assignments in Theater Arts classes.  Additionally, I was able to see a number of their Engineering projects from 3D printed drone replacement parts to foldable chairs with a few birdhouses and personalized phone cases in between. Gr6 Team Imagination visited three of the elementary schools to read their original stories to third graders that helped to connect the 6th grade geography and ELA curriculum with the 3rd grade units on folktales.

Although it certainly does not feel like it today, spring is approaching...at some point.  Heart & Sole is a program from Girls on the Run for girls in grades 6-8. It encourages girls to challenge themselves, try new things, make new friends and build confidence to be themselves.  As a team, the girls will run, laugh and connect. The season begins on Tuesday, March 24. It will meet Tuesdays & Thursdays after school from 2-3:30. If your child is interested in participating, they may not sign up for a Spring Sport at Stony Brook in addition to Heart & Sole, as this is considered a Spring Sport.  Lottery registration opens for Heart & Sole (GOTR) on Jan. 22, 2020 and runs through Feb. 11. There are 15 slots available. Girls who are chosen from the lottery will be notified via email on Feb. 13. Registration link: https://www.girlsontherunboston.org/Register-Now

If you have any further questions feel free to reach out to Roberta Oehley or Sue Hanly.

Each year at this time, we include this important information in our communications with families in order to help identify any students who might be in need of which we are not aware:

Child Search

If you know of any child attending public or private school, or who is homeless or has left school, and could benefit from a special education evaluation under Chapter 766 or educational services under the McKinney-Veneto Homeless Assistance Act, please contact the Special Education Department in Westford.  (978-692-5560 ext. 2111)

Every effort will be made to contact the parents to advise them of their rights under these laws.

For those of you who experienced a problem with the internal link, here is the updated version of the letter sent from WA in last week’s update with the corrected links: Revised WA 8th Grade Letter to Parents (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B95Qx8iWXxBoNUo1bnBrWlJnUzhyMXZEVmNoT2t...)
