Start of something new...update! SB 6-4-21

Commencement speeches often make reference to the other definition of the word which is really a beginning or a start of something new.  This weekend many of our Stony Brook families are celebrating older siblings as they begin new journeys and graduate from Westford Academy.  We wish all of our former Stony Brook students in the Class of 2021 at whichever high school they attended great happiness and joy as they set out on their new adventures.

This weeks notes from the clinic brought to you by the singing & dancing Wildcats Athletic Department:

As the end of the year approaches, 8th grade records are being prepared to send to the respective schools your children will be attending. Cathy Mucci, our guidance secretary, shares with me which schools your children will be attending in 9th grade and the health records are sent along. I also meet with the WA nurses and update them on any health situations, including students with Epipens, Inhalers and Medications. The names of the Westford Academy nurses are Kathy Bourdeau (kbourdeau@westfordk12.us) and Joan Mitchell (jmitchell@westfordk12.us)  and the name of the nurse at Nashoba Tech is Pat Trahman (ptrahman@nashobatech.net).  Do not hesitate to reach out to them prior to the start of the 2021-2022 school year. They are all wonderful. I also speak with Terry Grassi, the Abbot RN and Cheryl Carpenter, the Day School RN about incoming 6th graders. If you have an incoming 6th grader with medical issues, please reach out to me before the end of the school year.

Epipens and inhalers that I have here in the clinic will be sent home with your child on Friday June 18th. I do not have many Epipens or inhalers here this year but if you know your child will not be here on the 18th, please have them come see me on their last day of school.

6th grade parents, please continue to send in your child’s physical and immunization records from physicals this past fall, winter and Spring. Those are the records I am looking for. It took me months and months to get the records for our current 7th graders because of the pandemic. It will help me tremendously if you send in the records now. The only parents who should wait are those who are taking their child this summer-so for a physical in June, July or August of 2021. The vaccines necessary for 7th grade are Tdap, Menactra and 2 Varivax. If you look at your child’s immunization records, you may see that they have already had all of these.

All parents of children interested in playing fall sports should also be sending in current physicals. 6th graders can participate in cross country and 7th and 8th graders can also participate in field hockey and soccer. Every year when we have sports sign up in early September, several students are scrambling to get a physical into the clinic so they can participate. It is an MIAA regulation that student athletes at middle school and high school levels, must have a physical yearly in order to participate in both tryouts and the season. Please plan accordingly.

If your child has an Inhaler/Epipen/Dailymed/Seizure disorder/Diabetes please go to the following link for medication forms: https://westfordpshealthservices.weebly.com/forms.html

I will not be sending them out by mail this year. (We use the same forms across the district.)

Finally, I run a parent support group with Dianne Walsh who is an LICSW. Although we have not met in person this year, emails are sent out on a regular basis to our listserv: We share information about mental health resources. We are hoping to resume an in person group in the fall. If you would like to be added to our group mailings, email me at smhanly1@gmail.com and I will include you in the distribution list. Call or email with any questions-have a good weekend!
