Tonight is the first night of Hanukkah. The Jewish festival is celebrated for eight days and by the lighting of candles on each day of the festival. The celebration of Hanukkah includes a variety of religious and nonreligious customs and is a joyous festival. The most important of all Hanukkah traditions is the lighting of the menorah each evening. One candle is lit on the first evening, and an additional candle is lit on each following evening until eight candles are burning on the last evening. There are also a number of nonreligious customs associated with Hanukkah, including festive meals, songs, games, and gifts to children. Potato pancakes, doughnuts, and other treats fried in oil, which recall the miracle of the oil, are popular. Children receive presents and gifts of money, which are sometimes distributed in the form of chocolate coins wrapped in gold foil. Card playing is common, and children play a game with a four-sided top called a dreidel. We wish all of our families who celebrate Hanukkah a happy and healthy holiday!
