Medication Policy

A medication administration plan should be developed with the nurse, including plans for field trips.

Parent/legal guardians should retrieve all medications at the end of the school year or they will be disposed of on the last day of school.

According to WPS Policy 5503, the school nurse is the only person allowed to administer medication to students in Westford Public Schools. Medications are kept in the Nurses' Clinic with the exception of emergency medication such as inhalers and EpiPens® which students should carry at all times.

If a prescription medication is to be given at school, it must be in the pharmacy bottle with the prescription label attached. Please download the Medication Administration Orders from the "forms" link on this webpage. Please bring the completed Medication Administration Orders to the nurses' clinic with the prescription.

An adult must bring in all psychotropic medications to the school. By law, students are not allowed to carry any psychotropic meds on their person at any time.

Cold and cough medicines are not supplied in the nurse's clinic, however, parents may bring in cough or cold medicine from home along with a note. We encourage all students with seasonal allergies to take their allergy medicine before they come to school.

If you would like us to administer any medication to your child the parent/legal guardian must send a note to the nurse with the following information:

  • All medication must be in the original package and if it is a prescription medication you can ask the pharmacist for a school pharmacy bottle.
  • The student's full name and grade.
  • The parent/legal guardian’s printed name and a phone number where you can be reached.
  • Signature.
  • List the medication the student is currently receiving.
  • Approval giving the school nurse permission to administer the medication.
  • The time that the medication should be administered.
