Westford Academy Announces 2016 Hall of Fame Class

Al Duffett - Coach and Athletic Director

Al served as Westford Academy's Director of Athletics, coach and teacher at various times between 1974-2009. He amassed 206 career victories and six league championships as coach of the Varsity Girl's Basketball team. He coached three 1000-point scorers, and six league championships teams. His teams made three state semi-final appearances. Al was voted Division One Coach of the Year twice by the Massachusetts State Coaches Association and three times by the Lowell Sun. His girl's teams were eligible for the MIAA Tournament seventeen times.

As the Varsity Baseball Coach, Al collected 100 career victories. While coaching the baseball team he captured two league championships, one state semi-final appearance and four trips to the MIAA Tournament.

As Athletic Director he was responsible for Westford Academy entering the Dual County League. As the Director of Athletics at Westford Academy and advisor of the Westford Academy Student Council, Al was the driving force behind numerous fundraising events. He was responsible for raising over $100,000 for a variety of causes.

Chris Fowler, Class of 2009 - Winter Track & Spring Track

The 2009 Westford Academy graduate was a member of the National Honor Society, and four-year letterman on the indoor and outdoor varsity track teams. As a senior he earned a state championship in the Decathlon. He qualified for the High School National Champions in the pentathlon. Chris placed fifth in the country earning all-academic honors with personal bests in each of five pentathlon events. He capped off a brilliant career setting current school records in 300-meter low hurdles, 400-meter low hurdles and triple jump. Chris achieved six time DCL All-Star, four time Lowell Sun All-Star, five time DCL Team champion, three team Most Valuable Player recognitions and an All-American Award.

Sam Grad, Class of 2009 - Winter Track & Spring Track

During his junior year indoor campaign he had the fastest 55meter time time in the state and followed up with a Division II state title in the 55-meter dash and 4x200 meter relay. He was named team co-MVP, DCL All-Star and Lowell Sun All-Star.

Indoors Sam and relay members set the school indoor 4x 200meter relay record at 1:32.09 as they won the DCL and finished second at the Division I, All-State and New England Championships.

Sam dominated in the 100meter sprint and ran a blistering anchor to establish the school record in the 4x100 meter relay. His senior year was highlighted with being undefeated in the DCL sprints.

Bob Herrmann, WA Class of 1963 - Football & Wrestling

As a junior and senior starting center he anchored an offensive line that executed blocks creating gaping holes for the talented running backs. His team outscored their opposition by an amazing 212-33 margin. Bob was a starter at defensive tackle for the unit that posted four shutouts. The 1962 Grey Ghosts finished the season undefeated and won the class D championship.

During his final season with the Grappling Ghosts Bob wrestled at 177 lbs. for a superior team that went undefeated and won the state championship. Bob was state champion in the 177 lbs. weight class. He was an integral part of two undefeated championship teams in just one year!

Elizabeth (Lahme) Hathaway, Class of 1985 - Field Hockey, Basketball, Softball

When Liz graduated from WA in 1985, she competed during each of the twelve seasons, nine as a varsity student/athlete, and captaining three sports her senior year. Equally talented in field hockey, basketball and softball, her classmates selected her "Most Athletic" as a senior.

In field hockey, Liz joined the varsity team as a sophomore, on a team that earned the Wachusett League Championship. The next year, the team won the Division I Central MA Championship. Liz was twice selected as a Lowell Sun All Star and Wachusett League All-Star. Liz earned a Division I scholarship to play field hockey at the University of New Hampshire.

At UNH she excelled all four years, graduating in 1989. In 1986, UNH played in the NCAA Division I Championship game. She has been coaching field hockey for fourteen years, the last seasons at King Philip Regional High School in Wrentham, MA.

Peter Lynch, WA Class of 2009 - Basketball and Baseball

Peter was a four-year varsity basketball player. As a senior captain he led his team to both the Greater Lowell Holiday Tournament and Dual County League Championships. Peter was recognized as both the tournament and league MVP. He was an All-Scholastic multiple times and the team MVP. Peter exited Westford Academy as the boys' all-time leading basketball scorer with 1,129 points.

As a senior baseball pitcher and captain, Peter was instrumental with the team's 17-4 record along with a DCL co-championship. Peter was chosen a Dual County League All-Star while earning All-Scholastic and team MVP honors.

Peter was recognized by the Westford Academy coaches as the 2009 Male Athlete of the Year.

Paul MacMillan, WA Class of 1964 - Contributor

A charter member of the WAAHOF Executive Board is being inducted into the WAAHOF as a contributor. Paul has served as the Banquet Coordinator. He initiated the idea to have a WA Student/Athlete Contributor Scholarship, adamant that the recipient be a student who put their team before themselves. The first annual scholarship was awarded in 2015.

Paul was a member of two historic WA football teams. The 1963 team was previously inducted into the WAAHOF. Paul was the co-captain of the track team during his junior season and played basketball four seasons.

He coached Little League Baseball and youth hockey. Paul served on the Board of Directors for the Middlesex County 4-H for 25 years. He has been honored with the Salute of Excellent Volunteer Award and the W.A. Distinguished Alumni Award.

Abby McKeon, WA Class of 2009 - Tennis

Abigail (Abby) McKeon was the most prolific tennis player in the history of Westford Academy. She currently holds the record for most wins as a singles player. In her career she was undefeated in the Dual County League at the #1 singles position all four years of her high school career, accomplishing a 45-0 record. She's the only WA tennis player to achieve this milestone. Abby was a four-time Dual County League First Team All-Star, four-time Lowell Sun All-Star including Player of the Year, Boston Globe All-Scholastic, as well as a Boston Herald All-Scholastic. She was honored as the team's Most Valuable Player each of her four seasons, leading the team to four state tournament qualifications, its first ever Dual County League Championship, as well as the team’s first ever North Sectional Title.

Alexandra Millet, Class of 2009 - Soccer & Spring Track

"A.J." Millet was a four year starting goalie and senior captain for the Westford Academy women's soccer team. Her skill level, knowledge of the game, strength and talent impressed all who saw her play. A.J.'s leadership on defense made WA women's soccer a force to be reckoned with. Playing 73.75 games she recorded 35 shutouts in four years with a 0.83 goals against average. Her accolades include first team DCL and Eastern Mass All-Star four straight years, All-State All-Star three years and All-New England status her junior and senior years. Selected as a four year Lowell Sun All-Star, AJ was also a Boston Globe All-Scholastic selection. AJ, Valedictorian of her graduating class, went on to play goalie at Harvard University and is currently a medical student in California.

Roberta (Smith) Rey, Class of 1987- Soccer, Basketball, Softball

Roberta (Smith) Rey, a 1987 graduate of Westford Academy, was a superb three sport athlete in soccer, basketball and softball. A senior captain of her soccer and softball teams, Roberta was a soccer standout. Roberta has the second highest varsity goal and assist totals since the inception of the women’s soccer program in 1982. Her 65 goals and 54 assists, as well as being the most skilled ball handler in the history of the program, spear-headed her teams to a league championship and many state tournament wins. A three time Wachusett League and Central Mass All-Star, plus 1985 and 1986 Lowell Sun All-Star, Roberta transitioned to collegiate soccer at North Adams State College.

2003-2004 Girls Ice Hockey Team

After only two years as a varsity sport this talented squad was crowned state champions. Playing in the highly competitive Dual Metro League, Coach Craig Doolittle's team responded with a 13-4 regular season record, earning the third seed in the Division II state tournament.

In the quarterfinals game the Lady Ghosts defeated Latin Academy 5-1. In the semifinals Arden Lyons scored four goals as Westford thumped Duxbury. This 8-2 victory secured a berth in the Division Two state championship game.

In the championship game, trailing 1-0 late in the third period to Wellesley, Lindsey Harrington scored the tying goal. The game went into overtime, as both teams skated for almost four full extra periods. With 24.1 seconds left in overtime Perri Maduri scored the winning goal and the celebration began.
