School Building Utilization Working Group Report - 02/10/2014
We have great schools! How well are we using our space?
Goal: Develop a model to measure present capacity and predict future utilization
|Dear Westford Family:
I welcome you to the 2015-2016 school year. The summer represents an important opportunity for families to participate in many enjoyable activities. This time together is very important for every family. As we enter the sunset of a beautiful summer, the excitement associated with another school year is upon us.
The backbone of every community is its school system, and I am proud to say that ours is among the very best in the state. We have an outstanding staff, a rigorous curriculum and excellent students who come from wonderful families who value education. Westford was proclaimed by nerdwallet.com as the best educational “bang for the buck” in all of Massachusetts while niche.com has ranked our school system as the third best in the state and our teachers as the fifth best staff in the state.
Our classrooms are again ready to come alive! All summer, our buildings have been thoroughly cleaned by our custodians. Over the last several weeks, teachers have been transforming their classrooms into visually stimulating environments for learning that will open a child’s eyes and mind upon entering. Our schools will once again become vibrant centers of learning! As we welcome our students, I want to thank all of you for your support of our students and staff throughout the year. Your support is what makes this a very special town and school system.
Everett V. Olsen, Jr.
Superintendent of Schools

Westford topped our list for “Best Schools for Your Buck” on the strength of its graduation rate of 98.5%, the fourth highest in the state, and its relative affordability with median home values under $450,000, according to the most recent census data. While Westford boasts high rankings for its elementary and middle schools — including Day Elementary and Blanchard and Stony Brook middle schools — it’s best known for Westford Academy, the high school. The school’s test scores set it apart: 98.9% of 10th graders received the “Advanced” score on the MCAS. The school offers a range of Advanced Placement courses, including computer science, studio art and music theory. Given the quality of coursework available, it’s not surprising that 92.5% of Westford students went on to higher education, the third
highest in the state.
